Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is also the highest debuting non-Pokemon Nintendo game ever in Japan.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was always going to be a monstrous hit. We knew that leading up to the game’s launch, and when we got reports of just how well it had done in the UK, a country where Nintendo has traditionally been relatively weak, we knew to expect big things from its performance elsewhere in the world.

Just how big, however, was not something most people would have guessed. According to Famitsu (via ResetEra), who track weekly video game hardware and software sales in Japan, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ended up selling 1.3 million units in Japan last week—which means in the first three days that it was on the market there, given that it launched on Friday.

That is not only higher than any previous Smash Bros. game ever, it’s higher than any non-Pokemon game Nintendo has ever released—it’s an insane result, and it bodes well for the long term legs of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, at least in Japan, if these early sales are any indication.
