Rise of The Tomb Raider Shifted Nearly 7 Million Units

Meanwhile, the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider sold over 11 million units worldwide.

When Crystal Dynamics first launched Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015, it was exclusive to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 for a good few months (it released on PC in January 2016). The fact that it launched at a time when Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Fallout 4 were breaking records didn’t help matters. However, as it turns out, the action adventure title did quite well for itself in the long run.

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda spoke to GamesIndustry.biz about the series and revealed that Rise of the Tomb Raider managed to shift almost 7 million units in its lifetime. The fact that it launched on PS4 in October 2016 probably helped but that’s still incredibly impressive.

Matsuda also said that Tomb Raider (2013), which served to reboot the series and start a new story, has sold over 11 million units worldwide. As it stands, Tomb Raider is still a pretty valuable franchise to Square Enix. There’s no news yet on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the rumoured sequel in development at Eidos Montreal, but the next year should offer some new information.
