Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is not only one of the best games of the year thus far, it’s also one of the best Metroidvania games you’ll ever play- but sadly, it looks like it’s not going to get a sequel, if a fresh report claiming the same is anything to go by.

As per French journalist Gautoz (via ResetEra), Ubisoft has disbanded the game’s development team at its Montpellier studio, with the sidescrolling Metroidvania action-adventure title having failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations in terms of sales. Though official figures for the games haven’t been shared yet by Ubisoft, reports shortly after its launc suggested that within its first couple of weeks, it had only managed to attract about 300,000 players

As per Gautoz, core members of The Lost Crown’s development team tried to get another couple of expansions greenlit for the title, while a sequel was also pitched, though Ubisoft allegedly rejected both pitches. The decision was allegedly instead made to disband the team and assign its members to other projects at Ubisoft that were deemed to have “better sales potential”.

Meanwhile, ridiculously enough, it’s claimed that another reason given for rejecting the pitch for a sequel by Ubisoft higher ups was that it could potentialize cannibalize long-term sales for The Lost Crown itself.

In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, “The Lost Crown is a fantastic game. Not only does it capture the biggest strengths of Prince of Persia’s earliest sidescrolling instalments, it also reinvigorates the series in spectacular fashion with its Metroidvania design structure. From level design to combat, from the platforming to its visual style, from the exploration to the soundtrack, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an impressive accomplishment in more ways than one, and one of Ubisoft’s best games in years.” Read the full review through here.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
