Overwatch: Xbox One X vs PS4 PRO Head To Head Graphics Comparison

Overwatch recently got patched to support the Xbox One X. Weighing in at 650 MB, does the patch ensure that Overwatch runs at a native 4K resolution at all times on the Xbox One X? Let’s find out.

To begin with, the PlayStation 4 Pro version renders the game at a straight 1920 X 1080 resolution. Blizzard’s efforts on this front has been rather disappointing as we believe that the PS4 Pro is definitely more than capable to run Overwatch at a higher resolution than that. Some sort of a checkerboard rendering to 1800p would have been appreciated but as it stands right now, the PS4 Pro version improves marginally over its base version. In comparison to the Xbox One X, the difference is even larger.

Overwatch runs at a dynamic 4K resolution on the Xbox One X. This means that we get some gameplay sequences at 3840 X 2160, however since a dynamic scaler has been implemented, the resolution drops down from its native value at times. This kind of set up immediately gives the Xbox One X a huge advantage in terms of image quality over the PS4 Pro build, which by the way isn’t the Pro’s fault by any means.

Other than the differences between the pixel count, the Xbox One X also features slightly higher shadow quality and better texture filtering in some places, however the other core assets remain 1:1 across both versions. Just like the base versions, both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X run Overwatch in almost flawless 60fps. The frame rate on both consoles are excellent and we rarely witnessed a situation where there were drastic performance drops.

So there we have it. Overwatch on the Xbox One X, quite clearly comes on top here. The PS4 Pro version, unfortunately, suffers from the lack of proper support. At this point in time, the Xbox One X is the best console to play Overwatch. Hopefully, Blizzard can patch out the PS4 Pro version with improved resolution in the future.
