Grand Theft Auto 6 is over a year away, but fans of Rockstar Games’ open-world crime series might have something else to look forward to before that. As per known Rockstar insider Tez2, a current-gen port of Grand Theft Auto 4 is in the works.
In a post on GTA Forums, the insider claimed that a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S port of the acclaimed 2008 title has been in the works for over a year at this point and that it could release at some point later this year.
Apparently, the plan behind-the-scenes at Rockstar has been for a while to release a Grand Theft Auto 4 port, followed by a Max Payne 3 remaster to align with the upcoming launch of Remedy Entertainment’s Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake.
“Someone at R* hinted at the [GTA] 4 port, and by now, it should’ve gone up a year in development,” the insider wrote. “We may end up seeing it drop later this year. And it’s one more reason, in addition to others, for the LCPP [Liberty City Preservation Project] mod’s takedown. If they still follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days, they’ll do an Max Payne 3 port after GTA 4. So that is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port.”
Given the fact that Grand Theft Auto 4 hasn’t had a single re-release since its original launch back in 2008 (barring a PC port), a current-gen release would actually be met with great enthusiasm from plenty of series fans. Whether it ends up happening remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates.
