Destiny 2: Shadowkeep’s Scope is More Like Rise of Iron

In terms of other old planets, Bungie says it can't "grow the game infinitely, forever."

Bungie’s next big expansion for Destiny 2 is Shadowkeep, but how “big” will it actually be? Will it have an endgame-only region like The Dreaming City in Forsaken? Will it match up to The Taken King from the original Destiny? Polygon recently spoke to franchise director Luke Smith and general manager Mark Noseworthy, who clarified that its sizeis more in line with Destiny‘s Rise of Iron.

Forsaken was a huge expansion pack for Destiny 2. In terms of what we’re able to build this year, it’s more much in scope with a Rise of Iron or Rise of Iron Plus,” said Noseworthy.

So players can expect to return to the Moon, head to the Black Garden for a new raid, and earn new armour and gear. But don’t expect significant new enemy types or new Supers. Since the Moon was originally featured in Destiny, is it possible that other planets could return to Destiny 2 with future expansion? Noteworthy said, “Destiny [2] is a huge game. We mean in terms of the scope of the game, that complexity, but also just the amount of space we take on people’s hard drives.”

To that end, Bungie cannot “really just grow the game infinitely, forever.” Which seems to indicate that sooner or later, Destiny 3 will become a thing as time goes by. Rumours have circulated about the same for a while, noting its focus on more hardcore RPG mechanics (not unlike Shadowkeep). Perhaps we’ll hear more about it next year.

In the meantime, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is out on September 17th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
