Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Is Replacing The Minimap With A Compass

An interesting change, to say the least.

Infinity Ward are definitely making a lot of interesting changes to Call of Duty with the upcoming Modern Warfare reboot. That’s true not just for the grittier and more grounded campaign, but also for the multiplayer itself. More realistic customization options, the return of Killstreaks, and mechanics such as being able to reload while aiming down sights are things that they’ve already spoken of, but another very interesting change has come to light as well.

That pertains to the minimap- which, as it turns out, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is ditching entirely, and replacing it now with a compass. A minimap is something that has been a staple in the series for years, and has defined multiplayer playstyle for as long as anyone can remember- so replacing it with a compass is definitely an interesting (and bold) choice. Though this isn’t something Infinity Ward themselves have confirmed just yet, you can spot the change in some leaked off-screen footage of the game that’s going the rounds on Twitter. Take a look below (via MP1st).

Meanwhile, a Reddit user who has been verified as having been in attendance at the event shown in the tweet below also spoke about how the compass functions a bit. You can’t see teammates through the walls, but an indicator pops up on the screen telling you that you’re aiming in the direction of a teammate. As for enemies, the compass shows the general direction they’re in with a red dot, with players having to find them by themselves.

As I said, it’s an interesting change, and might actually have a significant impact on online play. At least right now, it seems like it might actually help with the competitive side of things, since the minimap could too often be exploited to get cheap kills. But then again, we can’t really say for sure until the game is out and millions are playing it to see just how well the change works.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is due out on October 25 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A full multiplayer reveal is scheduled to air live later today- check out the full timetable for that through here. In the meantime, you can watch some raw footage from the Gunfight mode.
