Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is taking the series further back in the timeline than it has ever gone before, more so even than Origins did. Its setting of ancient Greece promises to be an interesting one, and already based on all footage we’ve seen of the game so far, it’s looking absolutely stunning, replete with vibrant and colourful visuals.

According to game director Scott Phillips, who we recently sat down with for a chat about the game, the beautiful visual palette is thanks to the setting of ancient Greece, which brings with it a vast variety in biomes and geographical locations. “When we started looking at Greece, we started researching, ‘What’s interesting about Greece, what’s the best time to set it up?'” Phillips said while speaking with GamingBolt. “It’s a super varied, super beautiful location.”

“We have eight different biomes,” he continued. “From lava volcanoes, to mountain peaks with snow, to the undersea, to the island we have at E3. So, there’s variety in the visuals, and then it’s also a time of war. So, we have [representation of] war as well as the development of science, and art, and writing, storytelling. It was just full of things for us to dig into.”

This isn’t the first time Phillips has spoken highly of the game’s visuals- in this same interview, he also told us that Odyssey is probably the prettiest game in the series. Based on early impressions, I’d say he’s pretty close to the mark. Visuals, however, aren’t the only thing that will be seeing a bump in variety in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Thanks to its new branching narratives and dialogue choices, quest variety is also bound to improve. Whether or not that’s something that actually ends up happening is something we’ll find out for ourselves when the game launches on October 5 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
